If you are buying a new laptop, you may notice a small change on your next quote.
Some laptop manufacturers, including Dell, are now offering certain models without a charger automatically included. This is linked to new EU Common Charger rules designed to reduce electronic waste and make charging technology more consistent.
For businesses, it also raises a simple question:
Do you actually need another charger?
What is changing with laptop chargers?
The European Union’s Common Charger rules have already applied to devices such as mobile phones, tablets and headphones since 2024.
From 28 April 2026, the rules also apply to laptops placed on the EU market.
One of the requirements is that customers must have the option to purchase compatible devices without a charging device. This does not mean laptop chargers are being banned or can no longer be supplied.
It simply means the charger may now be offered separately.
The rules also make USB-C the common charging connection for compatible devices, helping to reduce the number of different chargers businesses and consumers need.
Why does this matter for businesses?
Many businesses already have spare laptop chargers, USB-C power supplies or compatible docking stations.
Over time, these can accumulate as laptops are replaced, employees leave or equipment is upgraded.
Automatically buying another charger with every laptop may therefore create unnecessary cost and additional electronic waste.
However, it is important to remember that not every USB-C charger is suitable for every laptop. A charger may physically fit but still not provide the power required by the device.
If you choose to use your own charging equipment, you should make sure it meets the laptop manufacturer’s requirements.
What does this mean for Amshire customers?
Where a laptop manufacturer now offers the charger separately, you may see it listed as a separate item on your Amshire quote.
We will normally include the appropriate charger by default.
If you need it, there is nothing else you need to do.
However, if you already have suitable charging equipment and do not want another charger, you can choose to remove it from your order.
That means your quote is complete by default, while still giving you the opportunity to avoid buying equipment you do not need.
A small change, but a useful one
For most businesses, this will be a relatively minor change.
But it is a good example of how purchasing technology is becoming more flexible.
Rather than automatically supplying another accessory with every new device, businesses can make a more considered decision based on what they actually need.
That can mean lower costs, less unused equipment and less electronic waste.
