How Microsoft’s New ‘Describe Image’ Feature Is Making Work More Accessible
Have You Ever Struggled to Understand an Image at Work?
You open a document or presentation and realise that half the information is locked inside an image or graphic that does not make sense. It’s probably fair to say that the Windows 11 accessibility isn’t great sometimes.
Maybe it is a complicated chart or a photo with important details that no one thought to describe.
Microsoft wants to change that, particularly for people with accessibility needs.
What Is ‘Describe Image’?
Microsoft is testing a new Windows 11 feature called Describe Image, powered by local AI built directly into your PC.
How It Works
On Copilot+ PCs (the latest generation of Windows devices that run AI directly on the computer), you will find Describe Image in the Click to Do menu.
Select it, and your PC instantly creates a clear description of any image, chart, or graph you are viewing.
The first time you use it, your computer sets up the AI models it needs. After that, the process runs entirely on your device, so no data or images leave your machine. Everything stays private and secure.
Right now, Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel with Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs can try it. Microsoft has confirmed that AMD and Intel Copilot+ PCs will follow soon.
Why This Matters
At first glance, Describe Image might seem like a small update, but it has the potential to make a real difference in Windows 11 accessibility and beyond.
Supporting Accessibility in the Workplace
A team member with a visual impairment can now understand a complex graph in seconds, without waiting for someone else to explain.
Improving Everyday Productivity
A busy employee can quickly review a report and get summaries of multiple visuals without switching apps or searching for extra information.
These small improvements remove barriers, increase independence, and help people work more effectively.
Accessibility That Works for Everyone
Accessibility features in Windows 11, like Describe Image, go beyond meeting compliance requirements. They provide tools that genuinely make work smoother, faster, and more inclusive.
When employees can access information easily, they perform better, collaborate more effectively, and feel more valued. That benefits individuals and strengthens the business as a whole.
Windows 11 accessibility is becoming more thoughtful and practical with every update. Describe Image is another example of how technology can adapt to people, rather than expecting people to adapt to technology.
